DOWN TO EARTH: Lakes of Africa

This Envisat satellite image highlights lakes in the Western Rift of the Great Rift Valley, a geological fault system of Southwest Asia and East Africa.
Lake Victoria is visible in the top centre; Lake Kyoga is the lake above Victoria; Lake Tanganyika is the oblong-shaped lake visible in the bottom left. Lake Albert is visible in the top left; Lake Edward is beneath Albert and Lake Kivu is beneath Edward.
This image was acquired by the Envisat satellite's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) working in Full Resolution Mode, thereby showing details down to 300 metres.
